Community Recreation to Elite Performance
Sporting Facilities

We all know that sport delivers physical and mental health benefits. Sport also aids personal development and strengthens communities. But did you know that it’s good for our economy too? Sport provides an estimated $83 billion in combined economic, health and educational benefits each year – that’s a return of $7 for every dollar invested!

Like many Australians we love sport, so as sport Architects it’s great fun being involved in the design of sport and leisure facilities. Our experience ranges from high performance training facilities through to school and community activity centres. It’s gratifying to know that each project we do helps more Australians to get active – for their benefit and for the benefit of the whole community.

  • At Carabiner, we take the time to get to know your organisation, project stakeholders and your users. Our design approach is underpinned by understanding your business case and the depth and breadth of potential use scenarios.

  • We have worked on a range of community sport and recreation facilities from the award-winning Cockburn ARC - a mixed use facility combining aquatics, training, fitness, social, health and wellness, community, meeting and retail spaces to the redevelopment and extension of HBF Arena in Joondalup to include a new basketball stadium and AFL training facility, and the mixed use East Fremantle Community Park

  • We have worked on a broad range of elite sports facilities from the Western Australian Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre to dedicated facilities for sporting codes and teams such as the State Netball Centre and the Fremantle Dockers training and administration centre.

  • Sport should be for everyone. Gender equity and the broad embracing of women’s sport has been a great catalyst that has also spurred greater recognition of the LGBTIQ+, neuro diverse communities. At Carabiner we are aware of the need to not only apply mandated universal access principles, but to be mindful of community-specific cohorts and to tailor facilities to a broad spectrum of abilities.

  • In line with the broader built environment industry, the design of sport and recreation facilities is being leveraged as a tool to promote health and wellbeing among the wider community.

  • From aquatic centres to elite performance sport amenities, sport projects sometimes require specialist knowledge for safety, sustainability and longevity of these specialist purpose designed spaces.
