Western Australians enjoy a wide variety of sports. Having access to world class, relevant and contemporary facilities provides the opportunity for high performance sport training for local athletes to inspire the State’s population as they succeed and create memorable sport and entertainment experiences.

VenuesWest is the provider of the State’s premier sporting facilities, delivering world class sport and entertainment experiences through the optimisation of its assets. The government agency directly supports high performance sport by providing training and competition facilities, directing subsidies to sports for venue and event costs and through the provision of accessible high performance sport experiences for the community.

We came to the project with a longstanding relationship with VenuesWest, having worked with them on multiple projects. This meant that we were already quite familiar with many of the facilities in their portfolio. Beyond evaluating the existing infrastructure, we also brought our broad experience in sport and recreation and our creative mindset to the process of developing a vision for the future that would guide the masterplanning process.

We provided a master plan framework and initial concept master planning process that focused on reviewing the built infrastructure within the portfolio.

We collaborated with VenuesWest to develop a bold framework for the organisation’s existing infrastructure and leverages existing State and private infrastructure towards their long-term vision of to be ‘Australia’s leading provider of sport and entertainment venues and precincts’.

In addition to reviewing current and expected future needs of State Sporting Organisations, the master plan framework considers the West Australian context and the sporting infrastructure expected to be required ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. It supports the changing high performance sporting and entertainment infrastructure requirements, particularly with the emergence of new urban, high performance sport alongside the more traditional sports. The framework establishes unique opportunities for the collocation of similar functions so infrastructure/facilities can be better leveraged by many, whilst also providing a comprehensive high performance sport and entertainment offering.
