Carabiner was engaged by the Building Management and Works (BMW) division of the Department of Finance on behalf of North Metropolitan Health Service to design and deliver two additional interventional radiology procedure rooms within the existing interventional radiology suite at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The works were located within the Hospital’s G Block, delivering the new sophisticated procedure rooms at Level 1, as well as the relocation of a combined stage 1 and 2 recovery observation area. The project also included an extension and refurbishment to the existing High Dependency Ward on Level 5.

We consulted medical professionals onsite to collaboratively design this specialist space. Each new procedure room fit-out includes a ceiling mounted biplane (dual axis) angiography unit to assist in conducting complex and invasive neurovascular procedures, alongside anaesthetic and monitoring devices.

The works were located in a high-demand department within a live hospital site and an ageing building, requiring careful planning from the outset. Our team utilised a collaborative approach, with considered planning and communication with medical staff allowing us to guide construction and development without disrupting functionality of the department.

Detailed planning and collaborative design were key to successfully
upgrading this state-of-the-art radiology facility.

High-tech imaging equipment was required within the procedure rooms, but the brands, spatial requirements and specifications of machinery were yet to be confirmed at the time of design. Therefore, we designed to accommodate diverse possibilities, ensuring the flexibility of the design would not only facilitate machinery selected for this redevelopment, but also any required machinery upgrades in future. Additionally, a control area has been positioned to ensure direct observation of each procedure room. Control areas incorporate a shared set-up area, catalogued storage space (for catheters and guide wires) and a scrub station.
