Beyond Grand Gestures: Small Acts, Big Impact in Sustainable Design
Our approach to sustainability doesn't always have to be about grand, climate-responsive designs or complex initiatives.
It can be small, vibrant objects made from recycled materials, that brighten the day of a child in hospital.
In a busy architectural studio, tiles and textile samples quickly pile up.
Carabiner saw an opportunity to re-use and recycle, collaborating with Perth arts duo Julie Moran and Nakia Stevens, who upcycle and recycle ceramic materials into colourful mosaic pieces. These artworks, containing recycled Carabiner samples, have been donated to Perth Children’s Hospital and Education Support schools in WA.
Similarly, Carabiner’s sample materials are donated by Julie and Nakia to regional artists, who in turn exhibit and donate their pieces to benefit local charities.
This simple partnership not only benefits a WA small business, it reduces waste, repurposing materials that might have otherwise been destined for landfill. Transforming what might have been trash, into treasure.
As architects, we're continuously seeking out these opportunities—big or small—to incorporate sustainability into our practice.
